Ilan Kerman, MD, Ph.D.
Works with: Adolescents, Adults, Individuals
Specializes in depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and psychotic disorders
I completed my medical education at the University of Pittsburgh, from where I graduated with an MD and a PhD in Neuroscience. I trained at the University of Michigan in Psychiatry and Psychiatric Neuroscience, and completed the Psychiatry Residency at Virginia Tech-Carilion Clinic. Over the course of my career I have published numerous research articles on different aspects of psychiatric neuroscience, including neurobiological mechanisms of mood disorders. I currently hold an appointment in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech, where I conduct research on the neurobiology of stress resilience and the impact of the microbiome on mental health.
I treat individuals 18-65 years old for a variety of conditions, including: depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and psychotic disorders. I enjoy getting to know patients and helping them achieve their goals. I believe in the patient-centered model of health care, which promotes a collaborative approach to facilitate change and promote wellness. I prescribe medication only after making a thorough and detailed evaluation, and in collaboration with the client. While I follow the latest research when making treatment recommendations, treatment plans are individually tailored for each client and may include medication, therapy, and/or changes in diet and exercise.
My passion is to provide the best possible care for my clients. I am detail-oriented, a good listener, and have an inquisitive mind. I particularly enjoy it when clients come to me with questions, which stimulates me to keep learning. I aim to be transparent with my thoughts and treatment plans, and ask that my clients are as open with me. In my free time, I love spending time with my family, and pursuing outdoor hobbies.
