New Year’s Resolutions, although not always effective, do give us an opportunity to get a fresh start as we enter the new year.  Most resolutions we made after New Year’s Eve involve improving physical health, but rarely do we use a New Year’s Resolution to focus on mental health.  Given the COVID-19 pandemic, and the overall stress of the last year, taking care of our own mental health is more and more important.  So take a moment this New Year to think about resolving to take steps that can improve mental wellbeing.

Make Positive Changes in Daily Life

It is important to set realistic goals for resolutions to be achievable, and one of those involves making small, incremental changes in your daily routine that foster positivity.  These can include removing sources of negativity, exercising more often without a specific weight loss goal in mind, being kind to others, getting into a normal wake and sleep routine, laughing every day, eating a little bit healthier, and being mindful of negative thoughts and how they impact you as well as others.  These small changes can have a big impact on your life as we enter 2021!

Engage in Self-Improvement and Self-Care

Self-improvement and self-care are key to improving our mental health. This can include taking a break from news and social media, taking time before bed every night to think of things that went well during the day, journaling, going for walks to clear your mind, practicing meditation or yoga, and compliment others, but also  yourself (this is a great way to boost self-esteem).

Reach Out to Loved Ones

An easy resolution that you can start on New Year’s Day is to reach out to the ones you love more regularly.  Often times, life gets in the way of our friends and family.  Now, more than ever, it is critical that we regularly stay in touch with our loved ones.  Take a moment to call that family member you haven’t had the chance to speak with recently, video chat with the friend you haven’t talked to in years, or set-up a virtual reunion among an old group of friends.  Our family and our friends are a great support system that can help improve our well-being and outlook.

Talk to Someone

These are all great ways to make small improvements in our outlooks and wellbeing, talking with a therapist can be a great way to start thinking about you as we enter 2021.  You can improve your mental health, effectuate positive changes in how you think, reduce stress levels, and foster a positive outlook.  You can reach out to us at the Granato Group to set up an appointment with one of our licensed therapists.
